Campania region to launch information campaign to dispute misconceptions about efficiency in healthcare
Vincenzo De Luca, the governor of Campania, has announced plans to launch an information campaign to dispel the notion that the South of Italy is less efficient than the North. This comes after the governor presented data during a live social media broadcast comparing waiting times for surgical operations in hospitals in Naples and Milan.
According to De Luca, the data shows that for certain surgical operations, the waiting times at public hospitals in Naples are significantly lower when compared to similar hospitals in Milan. For example, the average waiting time for hip replacement surgery at the Cardarelli in Naples is 103 days, compared to 231 days at the Niguarda in Milan. Similar differences were noted for other surgical procedures, including artery obstruction, stent insertion, and coronary arteriography, among others.
De Luca also discussed the phenomenon of ‘passive mobility’ in healthcare, referring to the money paid for operations that Campania residents undergo in facilities in the North or the Centre. He revealed that efforts have been made to reduce passive mobility by 50 million euros, with a focus on understanding the reasons behind the trend. The governor highlighted that certain fields, such as orthopedics and general surgery, represent a significant portion of passive mobility, with a large number of residents traveling to the North for such operations.
The governor also emphasized the presence of medical excellence in Campania, particularly in oncology, surgical neurology, rare diseases, and medically assisted procreation. De Luca expressed the intent to carry out an information campaign to inform residents about these extraordinary excellences, encouraging them to consider undergoing operations in the region instead of seeking treatment elsewhere.
Overall, the Campania region aims to address misconceptions about the efficiency of healthcare services in the South by showcasing the improvements and advances made in the region’s healthcare system. This information campaign seeks to reassure residents and promote confidence in the local healthcare facilities.
