Italy Adopts 4-Day Work Week, Following Global Trend
Wednesday 28 February 2024
In a move that is being closely watched by other countries around the world, Italy has officially reduced the working week to just four days. The decision comes after observing positive results from similar initiatives in other countries.
The reduction of shifts to four days has shown that employees are happier and more satisfied with their work-life balance. Additionally, businesses have reported increased efficiency and turnover, dispelling the myth that shorter working weeks lead to decreased productivity.
The experiment, which began in 2022 with 61 companies participating, involved reducing working days from five to four without any reduction in employee salaries. After six months, the majority of companies – 54 in total – decided to continue with the shorter workweek.
The data from a UK study conducted by “4 Day Week Global” further supports the benefits of a shorter working week. The study found that the effects of a 4-day work week are long-lasting and have a positive impact on both employees and businesses.
Italy’s adoption of the 4-day work week is seen as a positive step towards improving work-life balance and overall well-being for employees. It remains to be seen how other countries will respond to this trend, but the early results are certainly encouraging.
