A truly spatial advertisement. A Canadian startup has announced that it will take a satellite into orbit, which will show commercials and announcements, with the help of SpaceX. The CubeSat, designed by Geometric Energy Corporation (Gec) and still under construction, will be equipped with a screen where images and logos will alternate: a selfie-stick attached to the device will record and broadcast the video live on Youtube or Twitch, so that everyone can see it. The expected launch date is the first quarter of 2022, when a Falcon 9 rocket from the company founded by Elon Musk launches the satellite on its journey to the moon.
A project that should be open to anyone interested in advertising in space. To place an ad on this special billboard, in fact, you will need to buy tokens that can be used to program a pixel. As explained in Business Insider, Gec will make available 5 different tokens to purchase: Beta, for the X coordinate; Rhoe, for the Y coordinate; Gamma, for brightness; Kappa, for the color; and XI for the time. Using these tokens, users will be able to decide the appearance of their ad pixel, where it will be placed on the screen and what the ad duration will be.
Companies, advertisers, artists will decide whether to buy a single pixel or invest more to create logos and illustrations on the CubeSat screen. GEC co-founder Samuel Reid envisions the satellite display could become something like the collaborative projects of Reddit Place and Satoshi’s Place.
Tokens can only be purchased with cryptocurrencies, like Ethereum and perhaps in the future also with the Dogecoins, the co-founder of Gec, Samuel Reid specified, underlining that the company’s goal is “to democratize access to space and allow centralized participation”.
