“The right in government, whether national or regional, always has the same obsession: occupying positions, promoting friends, controlling the country’s structures through its men. When this is done in defiance of culture, it means that we have overcome the alarm level”. Thus the secretary of the Democratic Party, Elly Schlein, commenting on the appointment of Luca De Fusco as general director of the Teatro di Roma.
“What happened at the Teatro di Roma is also disturbing and worrying for the circumstances of this real blitz: the decision was made, in fact, with a violent forcing of the procedure, even in the absence of the President of the Board of Directors. And what is still disconcerting what’s more is that all this happens in a place of culture and makes this act a shame also on an intellectual and moral level”.
Gualtieri: “We will challenge De Fusco’s nomination”
“I am disconcerted. It is a great act of arrogance. A political arrogance that confirms their institutional deficit” declares the mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri in an interview with ‘La Repubblica’. “To govern a Foundation like that of Rome, which manages three theatres, Argentina, India, Villa Torlonia, and to which the Valle will be added, a theater manager is needed and not a director like De Fusco”, observes Gualtieri, explaining that these are “profoundly different theatres” that “need distinct planning. De Fusco bases his vision on a very traditional theatre, which has little to do with contemporaneity”.
Gualtieri had proposed Onofrio Cutaia “because – clarifies the mayor – with his great experience and after the extraordinary work done at the direction of the Italian theater organization and most recently at the Maggio Fiorentino, he could really build a system capable of, after years of , to bring our theaters back to the levels of the largest international realities”. Gualtieri defines De Fusco’s appointment as a blitz: “I had agreed with Minister Sangiuliano on a shared path, in method and substance. Instead, a deputy then had the right-wing councilors gather in a room in the absence of the president and the municipality delegate of Rome” and “he organized this abuse in the name of his party, in contempt of the loyal collaboration between the institutions”. How much does the Municipality of Rome invest in the Teatro di Roma Foundation? “Six million per year, 60 percent of the resources. It is clear – underlines Gualtieri – that we cannot in any way accept that the most important decisions are taken by force only by the councilors appointed by the government and the Lazio Region”. And he announces that the Capitol will challenge the resolution: “It is an improper act even from a formal point of view, and it seems clear to me that this blitz will not go anywhere because it is totally illegitimate. It is truly a painful spectacle.” And he concludes: “It doesn’t end here. We will fight in every forum to restore the legality and correct functioning of the institutions. And this arrogance will not pass, because we are still a rule of law.”
