Turin 15 February | Gymnasium of Ugino

Where once there was a station of the Italia 61 monorail, today a gymnasium entirely dedicated to cancer children has been inaugurated. It is a rehabilitation space created thanks to the donation of the Mattia Mantovan Onlus Association. It is located at Casa Ugi in corso Unità d’Italia. Testimonial of the initiative was the footballer of Juventus and of the Italian national team Cecilia Salvai.

The Ugino Gym, coordinated by the neuropsychomotricity therapist Lucia Longo, will represent a reference point for the motor rehabilitation of young patients with active cancer therapy (in therapy) and will integrate with the facilities already in operation at the UGIDUE headquarters in Corso Dante .

Thanks to the new space, the guests of Casa UGI who for immunological reasons cannot move outside will have the opportunity to use the services in the same residence structure, in the most absolute hygienic-sanitary safety. Out of 20 guests, 5 are currently in charge (for more details on the services offered, refer to the report on rehabilitation activities in the annex), with customized projects planned upon notification and in coordination with the professionals of the Regina Margherita Children’s Hospital.

Inside the gym there will be the most classic rehabilitation and physiotherapy equipment such as beds, carpets, balls and sticks, but also some innovative technological tools such as a multifunctional light surface to stimulate the ability to observe, creativity, the geometric-mathematical perception of reality and language development, a sensory-motor path on platforms and the Plugo gamepad by Playshifu, an interactive gaming platform compatible with IOS, Android and Amazon Fire tablets and smartphones, based on augmented reality and the Stem learning method.

The ultimate goal is to act on the skills lost in part or entirely during the course of treatment, with benefits on fine motor skills, eye-manual coordination, balance and sensitivity.
