In 2022, the Comprehensive Health Insurance (SIS) in Peru served over 650 thousand individuals with diagnoses related to depression. Moreover, the Ministry of Health of Peru (Minsa) recorded over one million cases of depressive episodes in minors between the ages of 6 and 17 in 2023.

Given the prevalence of depression and the significant impact it can have on mental health, it is essential to be able to identify it accurately and not confuse it with feelings of sadness.

Sadness is a normal part of the human experience and can be triggered by specific events, such as the loss of a loved one or failing to achieve a goal. It is a natural response to life’s challenges and adversities. While it may be uncomfortable, experiencing sadness is unavoidable, and it serves an important function in processing and overcoming difficulties.
