He chews leaves of a medicinal plant and then uses them as bandages to cover a wound. As Rakus, an adult male orangutan, heals his right cheek. Scientists discovered this in 2022 by observing a specimen from the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. Then the study was published in Scientific Reports by researchers from the Max Planck Institute. Previous research has documented that several species of great ape seek out medicine in forests to heal themselves, but until now they have not been observed so closely. The images show that the animal’s wound closed within two months without any problems.
