Vitamin D: how many minutes a day does it take to stay in the sun to stock up on it?

Vitamin D deficiency is a problem that many people have and in some cases they are not even aware of. In reality, we have a very simple way to fill up on this precious substance, especially in summer: expose ourselves to the sun. But how long is it necessary to stay in the sun?

Among the most common nutritional deficiencies, even among children and the elderly, there is that of vitamin D, a fundamental substance for bone health (contributes to the fixation of calcium) and for many other functions of our body. If the levels of this vitamin are not sufficient, we expose ourselves to various problems, including the possible appearance of osteoporosis. This is why it is essential to guarantee the daily requirement of this vitamin. How? There are foods that contain vitamin D, these are mainly animal proteins such as fish, milk and eggs (Read also: Foods (vegetable and otherwise) richest in vitamin D) but the simplest and most affordable way is definitely to take the sun.

Our body, in fact, is able to produce vitamin D endogenously when the ultraviolet (UV) rays of sunlight hit the skin and trigger the synthesis of this substance.

So sunbathing is extremely healthy. Of course, you have to expose yourself in the correct way, daily, for the right period of time and with due care.

Summer is the best time to stock up on vitamin D and we absolutely must take advantage of it. But how long to stay in the sun and which parts of the body should be exposed? The ideal, as also recommended by the Veronesi foundation, is 40 minutes, with bare legs and arms:

It takes 40 minutes a day in a T-shirt and shorts in the summer to build up a supply of vitamin D throughout the winter.

Therefore, if we spend a lot of time at the seaside or in the mountains, but also simply walking in parks or cities, we can ensure a good dose of vitamin D without making any effort. However, always check the level of this vitamin periodically with the help of your doctor, since in some cases exposure to the sun may not be sufficient.

Also remember that it is essential, especially in the hottest hours of the day, to use sunscreen (because the sun is good for us but also exposes us to some risks) and we must not be afraid that this habit can create vitamin D deficiencies.

Finally, consider that having the right amount of this substance in the blood could also be useful against Covid, as some studies have shown.
