What happens to your body if you keep your cell phone in the front pocket of your pants

There is still debate on the real risks of using the mobile phone, some studies show the danger of often keeping these devices against the ear during calls, but even simply carrying the smartphone with you in the front pocket of your pants may not be a good idea. Here because.

By now smartphones accompany us always and everywhere, we often keep them in our hand, close to the ears (and the brain) or in our pockets. But can these habits be dangerous?

Research on this is conflicting. For example, we have already told you about two studies on the risks of cancer related to the use of mobile phones. Read also:

But the possible damaging effects caused by the waves emitted by mobile devices do not only affect the brain. There are also studies on the habit of keep your mobile phone in the front pocket of your pantswhich would affect sperm health.

A study was conducted at the Technion and the Carmel Medical Center in Haifa (Israel) and the results showed possible risks, particularly for the male genital organs. In practice, you should avoid habitually keeping your cell phone in your pocket as radiation can interfere with the good health of spermatozoa and consequently increase the risk of infertility.

Why? According to the study, it is in particular the heat developed by radiation to be harmful to spermatozoa resulting in reduced motility and vitality. It is therefore advisable to keep the mobile phone as far away from the private parts as possible. It has been seen in the sample of people analyzed that those who used to keep it in their pockets were at twice the risk of having to deal with a fertility problem.

Previously another study (which contains data from 10 previous researches), conducted by a team ofUniversity of Exeter, highlighted the negative consequences on sperm quality of the habit of keeping a mobile phone in your pocket. According to the results obtained, in fact, prolonged and repeated exposure to low frequency electromagnetic fields (EMR) can reduce sperm motility and vitality.

The opinion of the Italian Society of Andrology (SIA)

The experts of the Italian Society of Andrology (SIA) underline that the research, to date, is not clear enough on the subject and in some cases it has been carried out on animals. It is therefore necessary to better understand what influence electromagnetic waves can really have on male fertility.

As stated Fabrizio Palumbo, scientific director of SIA:

Studies show that electromagnetic waves from cell phones could cause thermal interference on the axis that goes from the hypothalamus to the gonads; again due to the heat generated by the battery, they can damage the male genital tract if they are kept very close to it because, as is well known, the testicles are very sensitive to hyperthermia. Children, due to their anatomical characteristics, are even more vulnerable. All this emerges from animal models in vitro, but it is much less clear what the consequences are on fertility when it comes to analyzing what happens in humans.

Alessandro Palmieri, president of SIA, underlines instead that, although there are no certain answers, it is still good to have the utmost prudence:

The available data are conflicting. Some research reports negative effects on sperm count, motility and morphology, but others do not indicate a correlation. The major problem is the heterogeneity of the studies, conducted on different populations and under different exposure conditions, in terms of duration, from a few minutes up to 16 hours. (ā€¦) For this reason it is not yet possible to give a certain answer and today we have no irrefutable evidence that there is a correlation between the use of smartphones and a decline in fertility; despite this, given the data suggesting a possible negative impact, we believe it is advisable to invite all men to use their mobile phones cautiously.

The rules to avoid risks

The SIA advises all men these simple habits to avoid risks:

  • Do not keep the phone in the front pocket of your pants
  • Call and surf the internet only when there is maximum reception (thus reducing the emission of waves)
  • Do not place the phone on your lap while driving or sitting
  • Restrict the use of these devices below 10 years

On the other hand, with regard to commercial devices that promise to reduce exposure to electromagnetic waves, the SIA warns that there are none that are really effective.

And the risks for women?

Studies, to date, have highlighted harmful effects in particular in men in close contact with cell phones but it is not excluded that this exposure is also harmful for women (obviously scientific confirmations are needed). Exposure to radiation could in fact cause a reduction in the number of oocytes and cause fertility problems.

While waiting for confirmation, it is better to avoid keeping your mobile phone in your pocket. For safety, let’s always put it in the bag.
