In mice, this leads to behavioral changes: They withdraw and avoid social contact. This newly discovered connection between body and mind in stress-related mental illnesses could lead to new treatments for depression, according to a statement from the University of Zurich.

The research team showed that the levels of the enzyme MMP8 in the blood increased in stressed mice. “We also found the same change in patients with depression,” said scientist Flurin Cathomas. In studies on humans, the researchers now want to gain further insights into the interaction between the brain, immune system and psyche.
