Vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 reduces the risk of severe acute disease in children and adolescents.
Now, researchers from 17 health systems in the United States, in work led by scholars at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, have found that it provides moderate protection even against Long Covid, a series of health problems that persist in the months following infection. The strongest effect is in older children, who have a greater risk of developing Long Covid than young children. The research is published in the journal Pediatrics and was based on the analysis of a large number of electronic health records analyzed as part of the National Institutes of Health‘s Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery (RECOVER) initiative.
The data was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the vaccine against Long Covid in two groups of patients aged between 5 and 11 years and between 12 and 17 years respectively, as well as the period of time in which the patients themselves were affected from Long Covid. A positive effect linked to immunization emerged, especially in adolescents.
