A 45-year-old woman, with a very invasive tumor mass, was saved at the Caserta Hospital thanks to a highly complex multidisciplinary surgery, which involved the teams of the Cardiac Surgery, Urology, Vascular Surgery and Cardiology operating units together , Anesthesia and Resuscitation. The patient arrived at the emergency room with a history of persistent cough; an initial diagnostic investigation revealed a large neoformation occupying the right atrium of the heart.
To investigate the case further, we proceeded with a total body CT scan, which highlighted a more severe situation: the presence of a tumor mass from the right kidney to the entire axis of the inferior vena cava and up to the right atrium. . The CT scan also revealed an occlusion of the right branch of the pulmonary artery due to previous embolization. Due to the high embolic risk, the young woman was therefore immediately transferred to the cardiac surgery operating block, where the multidisciplinary team, coordinated by the directors of the Cardiac Surgery Unit, Andrea Montalto, and of the Urology Unit, Ferdinando Fusco, planned and the delicate and complex operation was performed, with excision of the tumor mass and the right kidney, removal of the neoformation from the right atrium and vena cava, removal of the thrombus from the pulmonary artery.
After a short post-operative stay in the Intensive Care Unit of the Cardiovascular Department, the patient was transferred to the Cardiac Surgery department, where she is currently hospitalized with a regular and peaceful course.
