30% reduction in the infant mortality rate due to malnutrition in Colombia

President Gustavo Petro announced that the infant mortality rate due to malnutrition decreased by 30% throughout the country during the past year.

Within the framework of the “Government with the People” event taking place in that region, the president highlighted that this achievement, although it does not receive adequate media attention, is a significant success for the administration. Petro attributed the reduction in the infant mortality rate to the implementation of a health prevention policy with specific social determinants.

«There is still a long way to go, because 30% means that there is still child malnutrition and mortality. But we decreased, which was the objective,” said Petro, emphasizing the importance of continuing to work to improve the living conditions of boys and girls throughout the country.

The president pointed out that one of the key social determinants to combat child malnutrition is access to quality drinking water. He highlighted the need to review the map of investments in drinking water on the Pacific coast and replicate that policy in other regions to guarantee the well-being of children.

“This is what we have to move, energy, water, popular potential, projects that allow us to produce other things successfully,” Petro warned, underlining the importance of addressing not only child malnutrition but also other fundamental aspects for the sustainable development of communities.

“If we do not want children to die from causes associated with malnutrition, one of the fundamental issues is that there is quality drinking water in the poor regions of Colombia,” the president stressed.
