A new design center in the Bologna Tecnopolo — Enterprises

Support the connection of STMicroelectronics, an Italian-French company, world leader in the field of semiconductors, with the research ecosystem and technological infrastructures of Emilia-Romagna. And the commitment to place a new design center in the areas of Bologna Technopole or connected to it, thus strengthening the company’s more than twenty-year collaboration with the Bologna University.

It is in summary the content of memorandum of understanding signed in viale Aldo Moro by Emilia Romagna region with the University of Bologna and STMicroelectronics, after the visit to the Bologna technopole.

A new design center

STMicroelectronics, leader globale nei semiconductors with customers in all electronics application sectors, intends to establish a new design center in Bologna in synergy with the innovative system of the Region, making use of the multidisciplinary know-how of the University with which it has already had several ongoing collaborations for decades.

An attractive region

“The Emilia-Romagna region confirms itself as an attractive territory, a point of reference in the field of research and innovation – commented the regional councilor for economic development, Vincenzo Colla-. This agreement, which will bring several dozen new researchers, is an example of that complex and innovative ecosystem based on universities, businesses, research and expertisewhich represents the Emilia-Romagna model for future development of the European big data hub at the Tecnopolo of Bologna”.

A ten-year collaboration

“Alma Mater and STMicroelectronics have been collaborating, since over twenty years, in projects and activities of high scientific and industrial value. And for this reason – declared the rector of the University of Bologna, Giovanni Molari– we are pleased to renew and strengthen our research partnership, which constitutes a point of reference for the area. We are very happy, therefore, to create the conditions for one stronger presence of STMicroelectronics in Bologna which, I am sure, will produce important developments and innovation throughout Emilia-Romagna”.

“The success of the work done together with the University of Bologna, centered mainly on joint laboratory which hosts university and STMicroelectronics researchers, urges us to further increase collaboration. The new design center – said the general director of STMicroelectronics Italia, Lucio Colombo– will develop advanced products and technologies in the automotive and industrial sectors in synergy with the regional innovation ecosystem. Objectives: support the transformation of mobility linked to electrification and digitalisation of new vehicles and develop devices with artificial intelligence for energy-efficient advanced computing for mechatronics applications. Furthermore, we aim to attract highly competent junior and senior professionals to our center and to encourage the growth of talents in technical-scientific disciplines, so-called STEM subjects”.

The protocol
The agreement is part of the Region’s commitment to creating a hub for the Data Valley at the Tecnopolo Manifattura of Bologna, developing a complex innovative ecosystem based on research, businesses and skills capable of extracting value from data, supporting and directing choices, protecting the environment, citizens and goods, as well as modernizing services.

This is in the Bologna Technopole, which hosts some of the most powerful HPCs (High performance computer) to the world and is the European and international reference for supercomputing, big data and artificial intelligencewith applications in the scientific and technological fields of meteorology, climatology, security, health, earth sciences and industry.

The agreement strengthens relations between the University of Bologna and STMicroelectronics. A collaboration has been active for many years which led, in 1998, to the stipulation between the parties of an agreement for the establishment of a joint laboratory at the Ercole De Castro Interdepartmental Center for Advanced Research on Electronic Systems. Partnership which has expanded with research activities in the chemical and materials fields Department of Chemistry Ciamician. The University intends to temporarily and exclusively allocate a portion of its property in Bologna to STMicroelectronics, pending the future establishment of the new design center at the Tecnopolo.
