Fiona Hill, a Russia expert who has worked for several US presidents, fears that if Ukraine were to lose the war against Russia, there could be a “division”. The West must therefore do everything in its power to slow down Putin, Hill said.
“Widespread anti-Americanism” is playing into Putin’s hands
“Fiona Hill, who has worked as a Russia expert for several US presidents, fears that an end to the war in Ukraine could mean a partition of the country, similar to the Korean partition. “We must not let Putin turn back the clock,” Hill told the Tagesspiegel.
The West must do everything in its power “to make it extraordinarily difficult for Putin to assert himself”. “With its invasion, Russia cleverly exploited the deep-seated global resistance to US global dominance,” Hill told the Tagesspiegel. “The way people evaluate the war in Ukraine is defined by how they look at the USA.” The widespread anti-Americanism plays into Putin’s propaganda wonderfully. Hill is skeptical about resistance within Russia. It is very difficult for people to defend themselves. “Even with the slightest doubt about their loyalty to the line, very brutal action is taken against people.” Putin uses the entire repressive apparatus. “We can, however, support and work with the Russians who are in the West.”
