after a two-week Christmas/New Year break, MPs have returned to their benches and are continuing exactly where they left off before the holidays. The coalition is still trying to approve the controversial amendment to the Criminal Code, while the opposition is trying to delay it as much as possible with obstructions.
It should be remembered that although there is a fight in the parliament, it is primarily about the presidential elections, scheduled for March 23. Their favorite is still Peter Pellegrini, who places himself in the position of a “more moderate” Fico, but this image may be disturbed by the “pro-corruption” amendment to the Criminal Code. The longer the changes are talked about, the worse for his chances of being elected.
Together with the return of the deputies to the parliament, the anti-government demonstrations also returned to the streets. Despite the low temperatures, even stronger than before Christmas. Over 20,000 disgruntled citizens protested in Bratislava alone, thousands of demonstrators also came in Košice and in almost two dozen cities throughout Slovakia. While opposition MPs fought against the adoption of the Penal Code in the National Council, people on the streets chanted “Enough with Fica!”.
