Tragic Drowning of Migrant Family in the Rio Grande Sparks Controversy Between Texas and Federal Authorities

In a heartbreaking incident, a woman and her two children drowned in the Rio Grande River on Friday night while attempting to cross into the United States. The tragedy occurred in the Shelby Park area of Eagle Pass, where access to Border Patrol agents had been blocked by the Texas government. According to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security, Texas officials physically prevented Border Patrol agents from entering the area in response to a distress call from the Government of Mexico.

The situation was brought to light by Democratic Congressman Henry Cuellar, who took to social media to voice his concerns. Cuellar condemned the Texas governor’s policies, calling them “cruel, dangerous, and inhumane,” and blamed Texas officials for their “blatant disregard for federal immigration authority.”

Cuellar’s post on social media indicated that Border Patrol agents were unable to provide assistance to the migrants, despite their best efforts. The Texas Military Department reportedly refused to allow access to immigrants, even in the event of an emergency, and claimed they would send a soldier to investigate the situation.

The tragic outcome has raised the issue of access for federal authorities at the U.S.-Mexico border, with the Biden administration recently complaining to the U.S. Supreme Court that Texas had effectively blocked agents’ access to a key part of the border. Texas officials, however, assured the high court that they were “working expeditiously” to ensure Border Patrol agents had access to a boat ramp in Shelby Park.

The Texas National Guard, Texas Department of Public Safety, and the Texas Military Department did not respond to requests for comment, while a Customs and Border Protection spokesperson expressed deep concern over the tragic drownings and the actions that prevent Border Patrol from carrying out its essential missions.

The incident serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing humanitarian crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border and the complex relationship between state and federal authorities in addressing immigration issues. As the debate continues, the focus remains on finding solutions to prevent further loss of life and provide humanitarian assistance to those in need.
