President Luis Abinader Receives Chairman’s Award for Leadership in the Americas
President Luis Abinader of the Dominican Republic arrived in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday night to receive the prestigious Chairman’s Award for Leadership in the Americas. The award, presented by the Council of the Americas, recognizes Abinader’s efforts to promote regional security, support democracy, and fight corruption since assuming the presidency in 2020.
Abinader will also be speaking at the 54th Annual Washington Conference on the Americas, a key event where top-level officials discuss critical issues such as trade, democracy, energy, and more. The event will take place at the headquarters of the Organization of American States on Wednesday, May 8.
Accompanied by his wife, First Lady Raquel Arbaje, as well as key government officials and diplomatic representatives, Abinader’s visit underscores the strong ties between the Dominican Republic and the United States. The delegation includes the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, the Treasury, and the Economy, as well as the President’s press director and the Dominican ambassador in Washington.
The Chairman’s Award for Leadership in the Americas has been previously presented to prominent leaders in the region, including Luis Almagro, secretary general of the Organization of American States, and U.S. Senators Bill Cassidy and Marco Rubio. The award recognizes democratically elected officials who have shown exceptional commitment to the Western Hemisphere.
Upon receiving the award and participating in the conference, President Abinader and his delegation are expected to return to the Dominican Republic on Wednesday. The President’s visit to Washington highlights the importance of regional partnerships and collaboration in addressing shared challenges and promoting mutual prosperity.
