Weimar (epd). The AfD politician Robert Stuhlmann, who was elected district administrator in the district of Sonneberg in Thuringia, is allowed to exercise his office. This was the result of a review that included the findings of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, as announced by the Thuringian state administration office in Weimar on Monday. There is currently no reason to intervene, the supervisory authority said. In the case of Stuhlmann, the first AfD district administrator in Germany, “no concrete circumstances are currently seen that are of sufficient weight and objectively suitable to trigger serious concern about his future fulfillment of the duty of loyalty to the constitution”.

The Thuringian AfD is classified by the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution as “safe right-wing extremist”. According to the state administration office, this means that members of the AfD state association in Thuringia are pursuing right-wing extremist efforts. Due to the fact that the newly elected district administrator belonged to the AfD regional association in Thuringia, it had to be checked in each individual case whether he belonged to this group of AfD members.

According to the Thuringian Municipal Elections Act, applicants for a municipal election civil service office must also meet the personal suitability for appointment to a civil service contract under other conditions. Stuhlmann received 52.8 percent of the votes in the runoff election for the district administrator post in Sonneberg, southern Thuringia, on June 25. He prevailed against Jürgen Köpper from the CDU.
