Peng Liyuan’s Recent High-Profile Appearances Spark Speculation
Peng Liyuan, the wife of Chinese Communist Party leader Xi Jinping, has been making headlines with a series of high-profile appearances recently. There is speculation that she may soon enter the political stage, but current affairs commentator Gao Xin believes that it is unlikely to happen before the 21st Party Congress.
On March 28, Peng Liyuan met with representatives of teachers and students of the German KDU Chinese Chorus who were visiting China at Beijing No. 35 Middle School. She has also been active in her role as the World Health Organization’s Goodwill Ambassador for Tuberculosis and AIDS Prevention and Control, recently investigating grassroots tuberculosis prevention and control work in Changsha, Hunan Province.
Despite her public appearances alongside senior officials, Gao Xin points out that Peng Liyuan is not currently a member of the Central Committee, a prerequisite for joining the Politburo. Under the Constitution of the Communist Party of China, all members must come from the National Congress, making it unlikely for Peng Liyuan to join the Politburo before the 21st Party Congress in 2027.
While there may be no immediate plans for Peng Liyuan to enter the Politburo, current affairs commentator Cai Shenkun suggests that she may already have the power to recommend personnel, potentially influencing the appointment of Shandong officials known for their loyalty to CCP leaders.
As Peng Liyuan’s public appearances continue to draw attention, her potential future role in Chinese politics remains uncertain. The question of whether she will eventually join the Politburo will likely be a topic of interest leading up to the 21st Party Congress.
