[Animation]Aircraft Design Master Gu Songfen: Serve the country without regrets in the sky over 30,000 meters

On the morning of November 3, the 2020 National Science and Technology Awards Conference was held in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Gu Songfen, a researcher of Aviation Industry Corporation of China, a master of aircraft design in New China, founder of aircraft aerodynamic design, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, won the highest national science and technology award this year.

In the history of my country’s aviation industry, Gu Songfen’s name is closely linked to many milestones: the first self-designed fighter jet trainer, the first high-altitude high-speed fighter (F-8), the upgraded model of the F-8, the domestically produced large aircraft Wait.

In August 1956, New China’s first aircraft design office was established in Shenyang. The first task was to design a subsonic jet intermediate trainer aircraft, named “Jijiao 1”, with Gu Songfen as the leader of the pneumatic team. Two years later, JJ-1 successfully flew for the first time in Shenyang, and the Chinese finally had a jet of their own design.

In 1964, my country’s independent development of the J-8 fighter was officially launched. The original chief designer was killed in a plane crash while performing official duties. Gu Songfen and several other backbones were ordered to take over the burden of the chief designer.

In subsequent flight tests, the J-8 aircraft showed strong transonic vibration. In order to clarify the problem, he decided to adopt the native method, flying fighter jets following the J-8 three times at an altitude of nearly 10,000 meters. Recently, the distance between the two aircraft was only 5 meters. A problem that had troubled him for ten years was finally overcome.

On July 5, 1969, the J-8 fighter made its first flight. Gu Songfen said: “J-8 can be said to be made by’rolling and crawling’.”

This high-altitude, high-speed fighter has become a generation of legends independently developed by my country’s aviation.The J-8 series fighters have defended China’s airspace for half a century.

In the 1990s, Gu Songfen began to lead the conceptual research of high-performance vision aircraft. He directly organized, led, and participated in the design of various aircraft aerodynamic layouts and the entire aircraft in my country’s low, medium and high three-generation aircraft.

Although it has reached its old age, the ideal of “designing the Chinese’s own airplane” has never gone away. In 2021, Gu Songfen was awarded the 2020 National Highest Science and Technology Award. He said: “Looking back on my life, there are no great achievements. I can only say that I did not waste time and did something for the country.”
