Former Honduran Deputy Tony Hernandez Has Assets Deprived
In a significant development, former deputy Juan Antonio “Tony” Hernández and his wife, Vanesa Cruz Sierra, have had their assets definitively deprived following a court ruling. This comes almost simultaneously with the announcement of Juan Carlos “Tigre” Bonilla’s intention to plead guilty in drug trafficking-related charges.
The Judiciary revealed that it has declared the action promoted by the Public Ministry against the former congressman and brother of the ex-president Juan Orlando Hernández to take place, according to a brief statement released.
“The Court with the National Jurisdiction of Deprivation of Domain read the judgment on the assets of the right holders Juan Antonio Hernández and Vanesa Cruz Sierra, declaring the action of Definitive Deprivation of Domain, promoted by the Public Ministry, to take place,” the statement details.
It was further indicated that if none of the parties agree with the resolution, they have a period of three days to file an appeal.
Tony Hernández, who is the brother of the former president of Honduras, was a deputy in the National Congress of Honduras. He was found guilty in the United States of crimes related to drug trafficking in October 2019 and was sentenced to life imprisonment, plus thirty years in prison in March 2021. The US prosecutor’s office stated that he transported at least 185,000 kilograms of cocaine and received bribes from drug cartels.
The confiscation of the Hernández couple’s assets marks a significant turn in the ongoing legal proceedings against them and adds another chapter to the unfolding story of their involvement in illicit activities.
