The Attorney General’s Office has requested the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) to investigate the forced disappearance and murder of newborns by the FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) as a new criminal pattern. This request arises as a result of the testimonies of at least 27 female ex-combatants, who were recruited as minors and were part of different blocks of the organization.
According to the testimonies collected, these women ex-combatants were subjected to forced abortions in an advanced stage of pregnancy, and some of the babies were extracted alive from their wombs to be later killed and their bodies disappeared. The accounts describe how these systematic acts were carried out, with the participation of a doctor in charge of performing the abortions in groups of at least 10 women from different fronts of the FARC, ELN (National Liberation Army) and ERG (Revolutionary Army). The attorney delegate to the JEP, Christian Wolffhügel Gutiérrez, has indicated that the following crimes should be investigated: forced abortion at advanced gestational age, murder of newborns, malicious injuries to the fetus and forced disappearance of newborns, as well as gender aspects related to these behaviors.

The testimonies also reveal shocking cases, such as the harrowing experience of an ex-combatant whose baby was thrown alive into the Guayabero River when he was eight months pregnant. Another woman recounted how Mono Jojoy, one of the FARC leaders, ordered a curettage to be performed on her and, when the abortion was not achieved, they repeated the dose, performing curettage on four other women, one of them eight months pregnant. . In another case, a victim hid the pregnancy from her until it was discovered by her column commander, who sent her to a front where abortions were performed. This woman recounted how her baby was born alive and thrown in the trash, but she rescued it and held it in her hands until she died.
Delegate attorney Wolffhügel Gutiérrez has concluded that it is necessary to broaden the investigation criteria and the scope of observation of the macro case 07, in order to investigate in depth the four factual scenarios analyzed related to the murder of newborns. According to the Public Ministry, the findings allow us to infer that these acts were not isolated or unknown to the FARC commanders, since they occurred throughout the national territory and in all the organization’s blocks.
