Wijnendale –
The 58-year-old woman who was seriously injured in a house fire in Wijnendale on Friday succumbed to her injuries in hospital. The West Flanders public prosecutor’s office confirms this. “A fire expert was appointed to investigate the house and determined that the fire started accidentally.”
The serious fire started on Friday at 10.20 am in the Sparappelstraat in Wijnendale near Torhout. The fire brigade had to break open the front door to get in. Inside, they found the 58-year-old resident lying in a hospital bed in the living room. The woman was bedridden and had raised the alarm about the fire herself, but was unable to get out on her own.
The fire brigade evacuated her and handed her over to emergency medical services. The woman was unconscious at the time and had already been badly burned. She was treated on site for a long time and then taken to hospital. She fought for her life there last weekend, but she had to stop that fight on Monday. The West Flanders public prosecutor’s office confirms this.
Brand accidents
“Another fire expert was sent to the house for an investigation. It was determined that the fire started accidentally,” the West Flanders public prosecutor’s office reports.
According to the fire brigade’s investigation on Friday, the fire started in the living room near the bed, but not on the bed itself. The house was subsequently declared uninhabitable. The victim’s husband received assistance from the police victim support service and is being housed elsewhere.
