Behind the Kunturñawi 12th edition festival, a step towards the decentralization of Ecuadorian cinema

CINE.

Since the first Kunturñawi Ecuadorian film festival, the purpose of decentralizing cinema in the rural and urban sectors, in the 5 provinces of the central zone of Ecuador, has been kept in mind, which is why we have worked hard to receive films among documentaries, feature films and short films, through the Kunturñawi “Ojo del Condor” festival as a direct intermediary for the dissemination of audiovisual products.

Exclusively with Piedad Zurita and her experience after the completion of the 12th edition of the Kunturñawi Ecuadorian Film Festival ‘The Eye of the Condor’.

Almost two months after the award for the best films that participated in the 12th edition of the Kunturñawi Ecuadorian Film Festival, in an interview with Piedad Zurita, director and organizer of the Festival, she revealed the experiences between the team, the filmmakers, directors of films and audience. “A wonderful experience, sharing with great filmmakers, actors and audiences. Every year we work with an excellent team and this time was no exception, a long process, since in the month of March to June 2023, the registration process began, where a total of 94 films were received, of which “Which only 46 were the participants in the official selection and 6 invited films, giving a total of 51 films exhibited on the grid at the regional level,” said cultural manager.

A project that requires a lot of dedication, was awarded and has been in the downtown area for more than 16 years and today is meeting its first expectations. Zurita emphasized that for this edition new strategies have been implemented, such as the execution of a film laboratory , where several Ecuadorian filmmakers presented their knowledge and through workshops and talks taught the importance and procedure for making a good film, “The audience has been able to talk, ask questions about what they had just seen. So these meetings are magical, they are a way of creating a space for the formation of the public and the decentralization of cinema, enriching spaces in the different provinces of Chimborazo, Pastaza, Bolívar, Cotopaxi and Tungurahua” he explained.

From Zurita’s cinematographic experience, this 12th edition of ‘Ojo del Cóndor’ was described as an excellent project that has met the objectives proposed in its planning to best execute this cultural film festival. An enrichment of social memory, as explained by the Ecuadorian filmmaker Pocho Álvarez in past interviews, is what was experienced in this edition, which was carried out thanks to the support and community of some institutions such as the Municipality of Riobamba, Municipality of Ambato, Universities from the different provinces, some cooperatives from the city of Riobamba, among other management companies and lovers of culture and interested in the decentralization of Ecuadorian cinema.
