Boyacá Health Secretariat provides some peace of mind in the face of a new variant of COVID-19 – news

Given the alert generated by the increase in COVID-19 cases in Colombia and the registration of the new JN.1 variant in the country, the Boyacá Grande government gives some peace of mind to the people of Boyacá.

Óscar Jiménez Espinosa, Secretary of Health of Boyacá, stressed that the actions undertaken in the past continue to be effective in the present and urged the people of Boyacá to resume self-care measures to prevent contagion.

The secretary also recommended not using the emergency services in the first instance, but rather going to an outpatient clinic to avoid saturation of the services with minor illnesses.

Both the INS and the Boyacá Health Secretariat warn that the increase in acute respiratory diseases is within the estimated parameters for this season, in which other seasonal respiratory viruses are also recorded.

“We want to provide some peace of mind regarding the information that has been circulating about acute respiratory infections. Although we have a high number of cases, it is a common behavior that is recorded for this time of year due to the social interactions that occurred at the end and beginning of the year,” Jiménez explained.

According to the National Institute of Health (INS), between November 5 and December 2, 2023, 1,066 cases of COVID-19 were registered in the country, with an incidence of 2.36 per 100,000 inhabitants, while, between 3 to On December 30, 1,647 cases were reported, with an incidence of 3.64% per 100,000 inhabitants.

Regarding the new strain of COVID-19, the official reported that the Public Health Surveillance System has not shown hospitalizations or deaths as a result of the most recent variant.

Regarding this matter, the Ministry of Health indicated in a statement that the COVID-19 variables that have been circulating in Colombia since the end of 2023 are “very infectious, but with a low capacity to cause illness, hospitalization and death,” a concept that is in line with what was reported by the National Institute of Health.

According to the Ministry of Health, it is essential to continue monitoring infections since “the circulation of the different variants of Ómicron such as XBB, identified since March 2023, continues to circulate in the country; and the new variant JN. 1, which has been present in Colombia since the week of December 24 and which originates from the Ómicron BA.2.86 variant.”
