British communications regulator Ofcom has launched an investigation into whether the OnlyFans platform is doing enough to ensure children do not access pornography on the platform. Ofcom announced this on Wednesday.

Under UK rules, UK-based video sharing platforms must take measures to ensure minors cannot access pornographic material. OnlyFans also has an age checking system in place, but Ofcom has “reasons to believe” that checking is not effective enough. It says so itself in a press release.

A spokesperson for OnlyFans says the platform is working closely with Ofcom to take the necessary measures around online safety, including age verification. For example, users must provide their name and payment card details, and a government-recognized age verification system (Yoti) is used.

The platform does acknowledge that due to a coding error at Yoti, a higher age limit than 18 years was indicated for a while. “We discovered that error and proactively filed a report with Ofcom.”
