UDINE. He steals a television at the Interspar, runs away on foot and is chased by an off-duty carabiniere who, together with the manager of the supermarket and a security officer, stop him.
Brigadier Marco Giandomenico, 49, originally from Udine, on duty at the Conegliano radio-mobile unit, foiled the theft in the Borgo Porta area of Conegliano on Friday at 6.30 pm.
Immediately after the thief’s arrest, however, he suffered a heart attack, and last night underwent heart surgery. He is hospitalized in intensive care at the Conegliano hospital, he is conscious and is recovering.
A 28-year-old Cameroonian, Ejoh Elemeta Mitterand, nicknamed “Ghagstar”, ended up in handcuffs. He has various precedents and an expulsion decree pending against him. She was part of a band that in 2013 she was arrested in Biscione by the carabinieri, for a series of robberies against traders. She had already served her sentence in prison.
Released from prison, Ghagstar found odd jobs, but illegal: he was unable to obtain a residence permit. On Friday he went back to crime. He walked into the Interspar and grabbed a 50-inch TV, running away on foot.
In the parking lot was the sergeant Giandomenico, who had gone shopping with his wife. The carabiniere, who in 1997 had foiled a bank robbery in Maserada sul Piave and was wounded by machine gun shots fired by three bandits and had received the commendation with the bronze medal, did not think for a moment and intervened. He chased the thief and stopped him.
He was helped by the Interspar manager and the security officer. The fugitive continued to struggle, kicking and punching.
The effort put a strain on the heart of Brigadier Giandomenico, who collapsed: an ambulance arrived in via Borgo Porta. The soldier is hospitalized with a reserved prognosis, it will take a few days before the prognosis is dissolved.
His conditions are stable. Yesterday he received a visit from the commander of the Conegliano Company, Major Fabio Di Rezze.
The city of Conegliano hopes that the sergeant Giandomenico will recover soon. Ejoh Mitterand, who grew up in the city, graduated from a Victorian school, defended by the lawyer Tino Maccarrone, yesterday appeared before the judge to validate the arrest.
He was transferred to prison in Vicenza, on charges of improper robbery and resistance to a public official.
