Carceleta de Pitalito will be demolished

The 60 accused who were temporarily in the Pitalito prison were left in the custody of Inpec.

The Pitalito prison, which previously temporarily housed 60 accused, will be demolished, as announced by Mayor Yider Luna. The detainees have been transferred to the facilities of the National Penitentiary and Prison Institute (Inpec).

On this Thursday morning, the transfer of the last 13 people who were in the Pitalito prison took place, located in an old school adapted for this purpose. Mayor Luna expressed: “We are going to definitively close this prison, we are going to transfer the detained people directly to Inpec.”

The process of transferring the detainees to Inpec was already underway, according to the Mayor, and now it will proceed with the demolition of the prison facilities. In addition, it was announced that the construction of the Gran Plaza del Café and a convention center will be carried out in the same sector.

The plan also includes the adaptation of the existing jail at the Pitalito Police Station to temporarily house the accused, while others will be taken directly to Inpec. These actions seek to improve security and contribute to the restructuring of the prison system in the region.

It is worth mentioning that this prison was adequate during the pandemic and that several escapes of people deprived of their liberty took place from there.

It has now been mentioned that at the Pitalito Police Station there is space for around 15 detained people and it is expected that they will not be there for more than 72 hours, while a judge defines their legal situation.
