Carlos Pólit is found guilty in the United States of money laundering

Correismo’s comptroller, Carlos Pólit, was found guilty of the six charges against him in a United States federal court, based in Florida.

The jury made the decision unanimously and resolved that Pólit is guilty of the crime of money laundering, in which he had the collaboration of his son, Jhon Pólit.

The judge in the case, Kathleen Williams, has 45 days to issue the sentence that will be applied to him; if the maximum sanctions are imposed, which is unlikely, he could serve up to 100 years in prison.

Sentence against Pólit

In 45 days the sentence that Pólit must serve will be known. This task will be in charge of the judge.

The decision was unanimous and had the affirmative votes of the 12 members of the jury who took an entire day to deliberate.

The former comptroller, Carlos Pólit, was found guilty of the six charges against him.

The charges for which Pólit was tried are:

One for conspiracy, understood as illicit association, for money laundering. Two for money laundering in the transfers made by Plastiquim and Cosani to the account in Florida of Venture Overseas, one of the companies of John Pólit, son of the former comptroller. Two for the purchase of an office building and a remodeling of a house in Florida.

The sentence must establish the time Polit must serve in prison.

According to the verdict, the assets obtained through money laundering and transactions came from criminal activities.

Therefore, their assets will also be confiscated.

One of the buildings was acquired in 2016 from an Isaías company, one of the companies that laundered Odebrecht money.

The North American justice system confirmed that former comptroller Pólit laundered money from bribes from this multinational and businessman Diego Sánchez Silva.

Sánchez’s illegal payments to Pólit occurred within the Seguros Sucre case. (YO)
