A recent report from the Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET), affiliated with Stanford University, reveals that China and the United States have dominated the artificial intelligence patent landscape since 2010. This study, which covers until 2022, sheds light on the intense competition and large economic investments surrounding the development of this disruptive technology.
In a significant turn, China surpassed the United States for the first time in 2013 in terms of artificial intelligence patents granted. Since then, the Asian giant has experienced exponential growth in this field, receiving more patents in 2022 than all other countries combined.

Data collected by CSET reveals key differences in the distribution and focus of AI patents between these two global leaders. In the United States, large companies such as IBM, Microsoft and Google are the main patent filers, while research efforts are more evenly distributed across various fields.
On the other hand, in China, artificial intelligence patents are more dispersed among government organizations, universities and technology companies. Additionally, they are often related to specific areas such as computer vision, a crucial field that allows machines to interpret visual data in a similar way to humans.
This trend reflects China’s strategic focus on technological innovation and its ambition to lead the global race in artificial intelligence. As this technology continues to transform a wide range of industries, patent dominance has become a key indicator of influence and competitiveness on the world stage.
