China once again threatened Taiwan after William Lai’s victory in the island’s presidential elections: “Reunification is inevitable”

Beijing Affirms “Inevitable” Reunification with Taiwan Despite Election Victory

China reiterated on Saturday that the “inevitable” unification with Taiwan is still on the cards, despite the victory in the presidential election on the island claimed by Beijing of William Lai (Lai Ching-te), from a traditionally pro-independence party.

Spokesperson for the Chinese office responsible for relations with Taiwan, Chen Binhua, stated that the vote “will not hinder the inevitable trend towards reunification” of the country, according to the official Xinhua agency.

Chen also warned that China will not tolerate “separatist activities” in Taiwan, firmly opposing any moves aimed at Taiwan’s independence as well as foreign interference.

Lai, branded a threat to peace by China, won an unprecedented third consecutive term for Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) after presenting himself as the defender of the island’s democratic way of life.

Beijing’s stance on “realizing national reunification remains consistent and our determination is as firm as a rock,” Chen said, adding that “Taiwan is China’s Taiwan.”

The elections in Taiwan were closely watched by both Beijing and Washington, Taiwan’s main military partner, as the two powers fight for influence in a strategically vital region.

In response to the election results, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken congratulated Taiwan’s elected president, Lai Ching-te, and praised the autonomous island’s “robust democratic system and electoral process.” Blinken also reiterated Washington’s commitment to maintaining cross-Strait peace and stability and to the peaceful resolution of differences, free of coercion and pressure.

The result of the election and China’s response have once again underscored the tensions and complex relationship between Taiwan and China, as well as the involvement of other global powers in the region.
