CCTV News:On June 25, 2021, at the launching ceremony of China Positive Energy 2021 “Five Hundreds” Online Collection Selection and Broadcasting Activities, the “young people” of the Shanghai Alumni Association Art Troupe of Tsinghua University and Dalian Ocean University “Youth Fight Against the Epidemic” Volunteers from the “Commando Team” once again sang “Youth”, deducing the ideals and dedication of youth particularly moving.

  “In a group”

The establishment of the art troupe dates back to a concert 17 years ago.

In September 2004, a performance by alumni from Beijing in the He Luting Concert Hall of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music awakened their memories in Tsinghua Park. So they decided to set up a literary and artistic club in Shanghai as well.

After years of brewing, the plan began to “work” in 2007.

In May of that year, taking advantage of the opportunity of the Tsinghua Shanghai Alumni Association to hold the annual meeting, the former deputy head of the Tsinghua University Arts and Crafts Troupe Ren Lihan, former solo players Chen Chen, Liu Xila, and Xiang Zuyun jointly initiated the “About Application The report on the establishment of the Shanghai Alumni Association Literary and Artistic Association Association was formally submitted to the Tsinghua Shanghai Alumni Association. In November 2008, after approval, the Tsinghua University Shanghai Alumni Association Art Troupe was established.

When talking about the original intention of the establishment, the head of the delegation, Liu Xila, said: “I feel that there is not enough time, and I can’t finish what I should say, because this life is very rich.”

However, the just-starting art troupe faced a serious shortage of manpower, and only a dozen people participated in the first event.

“Can you sing a chorus? You can’t separate the parts.” Sha Shouli from the Department of Power Machinery, Class 1958, Tsinghua University, recalled. At that time, he could only call house to house for publicity. “The phone bill in our house increased suddenly.”

Gradually, the alumni became “teammates”, and they gathered together from all sides of the city by transferring to various means of transportation. Today, the art troupe has more than 100 members from different grades and majors of Tsinghua University. They sing their wishes with action: “Working hard for a lifetime, I hope the motherland will not forget us.”

  past

If you only watch the head of Liu Xila, who dances his arms to the music in the video, it is hard to imagine that he is 81 years old this year.

The artistic spirit revealed in this old man stems from the love of the violin since he was a child. At the age of 9, Liu Xila was attracted to the melody of “Scherzo” practiced by her neighbor’s brother every day, so she learned the violin in Shanghai. In 1957, he was admitted to the Department of Civil Engineering of Tsinghua University and gradually became the chief of the Tsinghua University Orchestra.

Liu Xila in his youth

In the spring of 1962, the director of the Tsinghua Music Room suggested that Liu Xila hold a solo concert and assign it to his school’s best accompaniment and his future wife, Chen Chen.

Chen Chen started to learn piano when she was 6 years old when she was in Shanghai Zhongxi No. 2 Primary School. With her hard work and talent, when she was in junior high school, she was already the piano accompaniment of the City Children’s Palace Chorus. In 1956, she won the science champion of the six provinces in East China with a perfect score in the three subjects of mathematics, physics and chemistry, and was admitted to the Department of Electrical Engineering of Tsinghua University.

When the two graduated from Tsinghua University in 1967, they were in the country’s third-line construction. They went to the southwestern hinterland without hesitation. Although both Liu Xila and Chen Chen were assigned to Sichuan, they were still 71 kilometers apart from him in Chengdu and her in Deyang.

Liu Xila and Chen Chen

On the only day off each week, Liu Xila would ride a three-and-a-half-hour bicycle to visit her lover, but Liu Xila described her 13-year long-distance relationship as “not a big problem.”

For him, what was difficult and unhappy was that “Chen Chen did not play the piano.” During that time, Liu Xila got an idle old piano from a colleague. In order to give Chen Chen a surprise, he and a few alumni pushed the piano 3 miles with a scooter and pulled the piano home. The broken keys were repaired overnight.

In the 1980s, the country selected foreign students to go abroad. With their outstanding abilities, the two went to the United States to study in the United States. They became the first couple of doctoral students to study in the United States after the reform and opening up. After Shuangshuang received their PhDs, they declined all kinds of retention and returned to China without any hesitation.

Kaihui Zhang of the 1956 Power Engineering Department recalled: “They (Liu Xila and his wife) often said that they wanted the country to become strong as soon as possible, and patriotic dedication is the belief that supports our life.”

“In our era, as long as the state needs, let us do what we do. At that time, the state advocated going to the grassroots level, and the lower the grassroots level, the better.” Zhang Kaihui graduated from 90 people in their majors, and nearly 60 people were assigned to them. The three northeastern provinces and Inner Mongolia. But the day after he received the graduation notice, without saying anything, he picked up his luggage and rushed to the Heilongjiang Fulaerji Thermal Power Plant, where conditions are extremely difficult.

“At that time, almost all kinds of grains were eaten. We lived in the “dry base”, which was a house built of mud. There was no toilet in the place, and at night at minus 20 to 30 degrees Celsius, I have to run to an aqua toilet that has no water to wash at a distance of thirty or fifty meters, and it is shivering with the cold.”

Similarly, Ren Lihan did not choose to go home after graduation. When she graduated in 1966, she volunteered to support the third-line construction in Guizhou. “At the time of graduation and assignment, the teacher asked me if you had anything to take care of? I said no. At that time, it was high spirits.”

Ren Lihan, who studied and grew up in a big city, eventually went to Guizhou to repair bridges, build factories, and engage in product design. Later, he went all the way from Guizhou to Xi’an, and then to Jiangsu and Shanghai, from factories to research institutes and universities.

“We are a difficult generation, but we have no complaints or regrets.” Zhang Kaihui said.

  Returning is still a teenager

The youths who once walked out of the school gate are scattered all over the motherland and dedicated their youth to the country. Now they are full of white spots when they come back to Shanghai to meet together. But they are still full of vitality, maintaining the same love and enthusiasm for art as they did in the past.

“They have to rehearse every Saturday. Everyone in the group is unimpeded, and they are especially able to persevere.” said He Qing, the director of the documentary “The Past is Like a Song”. Although most of the group members are in the same city, some live in Pudong, some live in Songjiang, far from the rehearsal hall, and some live in Suzhou and take the train back and forth. “A lot of similar art troupes may sing and stop singing, but they are not. They have persisted.”

“They just want to keep improving. They will sing it over and over again, and rest on the sofa at noon when they are tired.” He Qing feels that he takes things seriously, is passionate about life, is extremely rigorous, and can stick to one thing. These are the qualities she sees from the members of the art troupe.

In addition to daily rehearsals, Liu Xila, who is also a professor at Shanghai Jiaotong University, also gives students professional classes every week, and his life is even busier than that of young people. In order to plan his time reasonably, he used the form to arrange the schedule very accurately and fully, just as he did when he first started working.

“Let life burn, not smoke”, this is Liu Xila’s motto. They sang “The Motherland Will Not Forget” and “I Love You China”, and they also sang “Small River Flowing” and “Let Us Dang the Sculls” pop songs from the school days. When the interest came, Yu Cong from the Radio Department of Tsinghua University in 1962 used ancient poems to compose music, and an adaptation of “Deng Guanquelou” was released. Today, they became popular on the Internet because of the song “Youth”.

In Liu Xila’s view, although it is a popular song nowadays, it has something in common with many old songs. From that era to the present, we have come a long way, singing different generations of songs. “But what Chinese people sing in each song is to not forget the original intention.”

Singing has become the sustenance and belief of this group of people. “I am willing to sing this beautiful youth song with everyone forever.” 78-year-old Ren Lihan said.

  Someone is young

“Working healthily for the motherland” is the ideal and persistence of that generation. “I did it! A few of them did it too!” said Liang Guoguang of the 1960-level automatic control department.

Liu Xila also received a letter from alumnus Sun Qinwu (sound), in which it read: I have worked for my motherland in the most difficult environment in the westernmost land of the motherland. I have worked healthily for the motherland all my life. I tried my best, I have no complaints or regrets.

Dedication is like an endless relay race. There is always someone to rush forward, but there is always someone to take the baton and continue to run.

“What makes me most proud of is our students.” After Chen Chen became a professor, he helped other professors bring out 2 Ph.Ds and 5 master students. One of them was awarded the National Youth Excellent Science and Technology Award in 1988. He was accepted at the age of 27. Promoted to be the youngest associate professor of Shanghai Jiaotong University. “They are now shouldering responsibilities in all parts of the motherland. Since ancient times, they have been heroes. I hope they will play a role in promoting our country’s carbon peak and carbon neutral experiments.”

“In fact, what I am most moved today is that I saw the spirit of giving up to me in the fight against the epidemic by the teachers and students of Dalian Ocean University.” After hearing the stories of the young volunteers sharing the fight against the epidemic, Huihui opened his eyes.

“I found that these young people have inherited and carried forward our spirit of being dedicated to the people and leading the charge. So the one thing I want to say today is, thank you, young people!” Mr. Zhang, 85 years old Holding the microphone in his hand, whether it was excitement or old age, his hands were trembling all the time, but his speech was slow, his speech was clear, and his words were sonorous and powerful.
