Civics is learning to participate

by admin

The last elections I have highlighted the fact that the disaffection from political participation has become worrying. A deplorable fact, but certainly not surprising. Like everything, participation must also be taught. There are environments and schools in which even very young children receive assignments, and it is they (obviously among all plausible proposals) who make some choices: the name of the school, the toys to buy, the color of the onesie. There are classes that read newspapers and discuss current affairs, which in the monthly assembly discuss their scholastic experiences, write letters or concretely participate in the collections of caps, stamps, clothes, toys, stationery to send them to the voluntary associations that make them good. use. But these are isolated cases. Instead it should be normal, from a very young age, to associate, take initiatives, create something together, organize oneself into groups.

But be careful: in these initiatives of theirs (which are nothing more than a real pre-politics) the children must be supported. But not to protect them from the effort of mediation or from the risk of criticism or exploitation, no: these are inevitable aspects in associated life and experiencing them will make them less naive voters. On the other hand, it is absolutely essential that adults give real credit to young people, that is, that they spend themselves so that in the facts what young people propose and draft is concretely realized. May that school really bear the name they chose, that the Association that received the clothes let them know how and where they were reused, that their open letters be published. In short, their participation and their commitment has been successful. Within certain limits, of course, and not always, because even failures are educational, but at least often. Otherwise the disinterest and distrust we all saw in the last election will be destined to repeat itself and get worse.

Civic education recently re-introduced in all school levels could be an excellent opportunity not only for students but also, above all, for teachers and all adults.
