Codechocó will declare two new protected areas, the sixth DRMI and a regional natural park

The department of Chocó is characterized by being a megadiverse scenario where strategic ecosystems converge with hundreds of species of fauna and flora, many of them endemic, in some degree of threat and even unknown; in which there is increasingly greater pressure to take advantage of the goods and services they provide.

In this sense, to protect these ecosystems in the region, Codechocó, in coordination with strategic allies such as ProAves, NCI, Cocomacia, local councils, among others, are advancing in the declaration of a Regional District of Integrated Management DRMI and a Regional Natural Park in the Atrato subregion, a strategy that will allow the long-term conservation of biological diversity and the environmental benefits derived from nature.

With an area of ​​30,398.3 hectares, the sixth Regional Integrated Management District will be declared, which will be called “Las Siete Sabias Central Rainforest – Esperanza de Vida”, located between the municipalities of Quibdó and Atrato; and that includes part of the townships of Pacurita, Guadalupe, Tutunendo, San Francisco de Ichó, La Troje, San Martín de Purré and San José de Purré.

On the other hand, there is the “Las Tángaras Regional Natural Park”, a public conservation figure located on the western slope of the western mountain range of the Chocó department, exactly in the municipality of El Carmen de Atrato. It has an area of ​​2,316.17 hectares, where 678 species of wild fauna and 247 species of flora are recorded, among which the families Melastomataceae, Rubiaceae, Lauraceae, among others, stand out.

“The declaration and planning of new protected areas in our jurisdiction; and guaranteeing the protection of all that valuable natural resource that we possess, has been Codechocó’s great commitment. For this reason, in a few days we will be presenting to the entity’s board of directors the most recent conservation proposals that will be part of the National System of Protected Areas (SINAP) and at the same time will guarantee the environmental conditions necessary to maintain the ecosystem balance of this area. ”said Arnold Rincón, general director of Codechocó.

For his part, Neyver Obando Mosquera, Deputy Director of coastal marine and protected areas of the corporation, said that both processes are of great importance for the comprehensive conservation strategy that Codechocó has been leading in the Department, which are due to the result of an analysis of the state. current state of the ecosystem, the uses and potentials of the land, the socioeconomic needs of the area; in addition to the agreements established with the communities involved.
