The organization underlines: “The flare-up of the flames is also favored by the great heat but what is worrying is the action of the arsonists”

ROME. The anomalous heat and the lack of rain favor the flaring up of fires in the Center-South, from Sicily to Sardinia, from Molise to the Marche up to Abruzzo with thousands of hectares of Mediterranean scrub, pine forests, woods and olive trees burned. This was revealed by a monitoring of Coldiretti which shows that the tropical temperatures and the absence of precipitation in the South favor the spread of the flames and help the arsonists.

The agricultural organization – underlines – that “to restore the woods reduced to ashes by the fire it will take up to 15 years with damage to the environment, the economy, work and tourism”. Coldiretti adds that “all traditional human activities and the discovery of the territory by tens of thousands of enthusiasts will also be prevented in the burned areas”. The organization also maintains that “if the flare-up of the flames is certainly favored by the anomalous climate, what is worrying is the action of the arsonists with 60% of the fires estimated to be caused voluntarily”. Coldiretti concludes that “Italy is a wooded country with more than 1/3 (38%) of the total national area covered by forests.

Almost 1 in 3 woods (32%) in the peninsula is part of protected areas and in just under 30 years – the organization highlights – they have grown by almost 27%, going from 9 million hectares in 1990 to the current 11.4 million “. To increase the Italian forest heritage, Coldiretti has worked out together with Federforeste the project in the PNRR to plant 50 million trees in Italy over the next five years in rural and metropolitan areas.
