Ecuador, for months, will be in the sights of nations.
The Organization of American States (OAS) approved a resolution strongly condemning the “intrusion into the facilities of the Mexican Embassy in Ecuador.” According to analysts, this action could cause foreign investment to be limited or stopped.
Situation
The OAS, with the support of 29 countries – of the 35 that make up it -, on the morning of this April 10, 2024, approved a resolution that “strongly” condemns the invasion of the Mexican embassy by the Ecuadorian government.
In this regard, the economist and university professor, Vicente Vega, stated that the situation is more complex than it seems; Well, beyond the legal actions imposed by the OAS, foreign investment is seriously compromised: no one will want to invest in a country censored by dozens of countries.
“If foreign companies do not arrive in Ecuador, the economy will be in decline, because sources of work, the driving force of the inhabitants of a town, will begin to become scarce; Crime rates will rise, followed by migration,” he said.
For the constitutionalist Samuel Calvas, for his part, the Ecuador-Mexico problem became political—both in Ecuador and in the Aztec country—because there, this year, there are elections to elect a new president; and here, in a few days, we will go to the polls for the Popular Consultation.
“I am convinced that after the Mexican people’s complaint against Ecuador, in the International Court of Justice, the entity will rule in their favor, because the evidence of the invasion of the embassy is overwhelming, and violates the treaties,” he said.
Furthermore, he stressed, this situation will last months and in the end there will be sanctions, but not of an economic nature, but of a legal nature: restricting the country from participating in international events, limiting the support of other nations, among other actions. (YO)
