The women’s team of the Gabriela Cavalieri-Cuencanos club finished undefeated in the first National Hockey Ranking 2024 that was held in Quito.

The Azuayan representatives, with their outstanding participation, achieved the title of the category, by closing the competition without defeats, with the least defeated fence and with one of their players as the scorer.

The representatives of the province traveled to the Capital, with the firm objective of having a leading role. Their participation did not disappoint, and they won the prize for so many nights that were used for their preparation.

The Azuayo cast had intense competition with casts from Quito, Milagro and Puyo. In the previous phase he played five matches and won them all against Lobos, Orcos, Predator and Scorpion.

After this positive result in the round-robin match, the players from Cuenca reached the final.

In the match for the title, the Gabriel Cavalieri-Cuencanos club faced Lobos. The result was 3-1, in favor of the Azuayo team. This first place was described as a historic result for the province.

The team was made up of: Valentina Monge, Darla Ochoa, Jetzabel Ruiz, Zayetzi Ruiz, Karol Ruiz, Chrislette Ruiz, Evelyn Ruiz, Samantha Quinche, Abigail Quinche and Daniela Ortiz. Sergio Rea and Joshua Beltrán were part of the coaching staff.

This was mentioned by Omar Monge, who is in charge of preparing the group of athletes, who train every night at the Totoracocha Skatedrome.

The strategist explained that the team is called Cuencanos, but as a legal club they represent Gabriela Cavalieri’s team.

“We are all happy with this result. We worked 100% for this role. They achieved everything they learned, the games went the way we wanted. After this result, the team resumed practices. Technique and physique are improved, every night from 9:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., in Totoracocha,” explained Monge.

The same strategist stressed that the outstanding participation of his team was completed with two individual distinctions. Jetzabel Ruiz was the goalkeeper with the least defeated goal

On the other hand, the offensive Zayetzi Ruiz was the top scorer in the National Ranking.

According to Monge, these results motivate the members of the provincial team so that this discipline in Azuay does not disappear.

“All these actions motivate hockey players to continue keeping this sport alive. Time and money are sacrificed, but we don’t want hockey to be lost.”
