According to Shawn Levy, Deadpool & Wolverine it simply isn’t Deadpool 3. The director, who will soon tell a new adventure of Wade Wilson at the cinema, specified why Marvel Studios decided to interrupt the trend of original films with Ryan Reynolds giving the third chapter a real title that anticipated and incorporated the hype. Expected in theaters on July 26, 2024, the film brings with it a strong load of expectations being the only one from Marvel released on the big screen during the year. In addition to Ryan Reynolds, in Deadpool & Wolverine we will of course also see again Hugh Jackman, set to reprise his iconic X-Men role. Thinking about the film, however, director Shawn Levy clarified why we shouldn’t understand this as simply the third Deadpool film.

Deadpool & Wolverine is not simply Deadpool 3
According to Shawn Levy, it is wrong to consider Deadpool & Wolverine as Deadpool 3. But why? And how should we differentiate these two products? The answer comes from the director himself who, interviewed by Screen Rant during the CinemaCon 2024revealed how we should actually interpret Deadpool & Wolverine:
As far as creating the story of Deadpool and Wolverine, I felt privileged every day because you’re talking about two huge movie stars in their most iconic roles. It also gave me an opportunity. It’s the third Deadpool movie, but it’s not Deadpool 3. It’s a different thing that’s very reminiscent of Deadpool and Wolverine. And it’s not trying to copy anything from the first two films. They were great, but this is an adventure with two characters.
Wolverine therefore deserves to be mentioned in the title as well, being the protagonist of the story told. The plot, from what has emerged so far, will see Wade Wilson contacted by TVA for a new mission: stop the variants in the various timelines to restore order. What if one of those variants was Wolverine himself? Also thinking about the dynamics of the characters, Shaw Levy talked about how he was able to work on these two iconic characters:
The guiding thought in the making of the film was the delight of the audience. That has always been the North Star. Yes, it will be complicated. Yes, it will be fun. This is a fact. But we wanted to create an amazing moment for the audience in the cinema and that’s our goal.
