Decorations withdrawn from General (r) Jesús Armando Arias Cabrales

The Government has revoked the rights of retired General Jesús Armando Arias Cabrales to publicly display and use the decorations awarded during his military career, as provided by decree 1070 of 2015.

This measure has been taken due to the sentence for forced disappearance imposed on the retired military officer. by the 51st Criminal Court of the Bogotá Circuit in 2011.

The decorations and recognitions that are now withdrawn from Arias Cabrales include the Distinguished Services Medal in Public Order (1985), the Antonio Nariño Order of Military Merit in the degree of Grand Cross (1986), the Almirante Padilla Order of Naval Merit in the degree of Grand Officer (1989), and the Air Force Cross for Aeronautical Merit in the rank of Grand Officer (1989).

The decision is based on the regulations that establish the loss of rights to use decorations for soldiers convicted of intentional crimes.. Arias Cabrales was sentenced to 35 years in prison for forced disappearance, a sentence that was confirmed by the Superior Court of Bogotá in 2014 and reviewed by the Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice in 2019, which denied the appeal of cassation against the sentence imposed.

The retired general commanded the Thirteenth Brigade of the National Army during the operation to retake the Palace of Justice in Bogotá in 1985. In 2023, the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) excluded Arias Cabrales for not complying with his obligations, defrauding the duties derived from his submission to the jurisdiction and not satisfying the right to the truth of the victims.
