Decrease in egg prices in Colombia worries producers.

The reason for the drop in price goes back to a supply and demand dynamic in the country.

Without a doubt, one of the basic products in the family basket that caused the most controversy due to its increase in the last three years was the egg, an essential food in Colombian homes. However, a reduction in its price has recently been observed, which generates concern among producers. What could be the reason behind this decrease?

Colombia is part of the 10 countries with the highest egg production.

The National Federation of Poultry Farmers of Colombia (Fenavi) announced one of the main reasons why this downward trend has been evident. Gonzalo Moreno, director of this institution, indicated that during the last two weeks of December and the first two of this year there has been a reduction in the demand for eggs, a consequence of the school holidays, where the School Feeding Program (PAE) does not operate:

“This is a trend that occurs at the end of the year that we have seen historically. And what DANE has said, which is the entity that takes the prices to which we all refer, is that the first week of January there was a reduction in the reference case of double A red eggs, price of Bogotá – Corabastos” .

According to Moreno, double A eggs dropped from approximately $558 to $518 pesos, as well as the smallest egg, which birds begin to lay at the beginning of their production cycle, has also shown a decrease.

The downturn won’t last
Given the situation, it is expected that there will be a rebound at the beginning of February, correcting this behavior: “What has not been seen since 2021 was this phenomenon that we are having at the moment. We hope that at the end of January, when everything returns to normal, the price will rise again, because some producers are selling below cost and it is a very complicated situation for them,” Moreno added.

Risaralda
According to data provided by Fenavi for the Coffee Region and Risaralda in 2022, egg production in the department reached 222 million units. In Risaralda, they are distributed in 100 poultry farms that house approximately 3,800,000 birds for both commercial egg production and chicken meat generation. In addition, the Coffee Axis contributes significantly to the national panorama, representing 8% of the total production of eggs and chicken meat in the country. Fenavi Risaralda also highlights that 85% of the farms in Risaralda have certification as Biosafe farms.

Security
On the other hand, the director of Fenavi also expressed concern about the security issue that affects the entire country. Moreno expressed his dismay at the current situation, describing it as regrettable. He observes a general deterioration in the field of security throughout the national territory: “Producing food in the countryside is becoming very dangerous, we need to recover security throughout the Colombian territory.”

Given
In 2023, Fenavi closed with an annual production of 16,864 million eggs.

The amount
3.8% was the growth that was evident in 2023 compared to 2022.
