Personnel from Diplomatic Missions and International Organizations Fleeing Haiti Due to Violence
SANTO DOMINGO – In response to the escalating levels of instability and violence in Haiti, personnel from diplomatic missions and international organizations have been evacuated to the Dominican Republic, as confirmed by the Dominican Ministry of Defense on Tuesday.
The Ministry stated that a total of 296 individuals have been transferred, including 174 men, 105 women, 9 girls, and 8 boys. These evacuees hail from the European Union, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the United Nations, as well as the embassies of Cuba and Canada.
Both Canada and the United States have requested permission to temporarily access personnel and equipment, including aircraft, to provide support amidst the crisis. The Ministry of Defense has assured that the necessary equipment will arrive in the coming days to aid in the evacuation efforts.
“The Ministry of Defense of the Dominican Republic will collaborate to ensure the efficient execution of these evacuation operations,” the Ministry stated in a press release.
The violence in Haiti has been on the rise since the end of February, particularly in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince, where powerful armed gangs have been terrorizing the population. Last week, an agreement was reached for the creation of a transitional presidential council, leading to the resignation of Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry.
This transitional council is expected to pave the way for the appointment of a new prime minister and the organization of presidential elections. Additionally, Haiti is anticipating the arrival of a multinational security support mission led by Kenya, approved by the UN last October but yet to be deployed.
As the situation in Haiti remains precarious, the international community continues to monitor the developments closely and take necessary actions to ensure the safety and well-being of those affected by the violence.
