“Do you remember us?”: In an exhibition the story of Giaon’s emigrants

by admin

An exhibition that is the result of the long work for the recovery and cataloging of documents and photographs by the Limana fractional committee

TO THE PORT. Telling moments, eras, situations. But above all, to escape from oblivion, to be a concrete witness. This is the merit of the photographs. Especially the photographs that speak of emigration. One of the most incisive themes in shaping our history and our contemporaneity. A question that has marked Italy – and with it Veneto and the province of Belluno – from multiple points of view: from the social to the economic, from the cultural to the linguistic, and the list could go on and on. Yet, despite this weight, despite the numbers of an omnipresent phenomenon in our territories, emigration has always remained a little hidden, almost hidden, marginal not only in the political debate, but also in the construction of a commonly accepted collective memory. In some ways, we could say that it has been forgotten.

This is what the extraordinary patrimony collected by the Fractional Committee of Giaon offers us and proposed in the exhibition “Ve memoriaeo de noi. The story of our emigrants “inaugurated today, Saturday 12 June, in” muted “given restrictive regulations due to the current health emergency.” The initiative promoted by the Fractional Committee of Giaon and the Bellunesi nel Mondo Association – the words of the mayor di Limana, Milena De Zanet – has great historical and civil value: we can and must learn from history. This initiative makes us understand how the images of the past are often mirrors of the present; it allows the new generations to know the sufferings, the difficulties, but also the successes of our emigrants and pays off a debt of gratitude with those who, through their choice to emigrate, have contributed to the development of our country and our communities. Thanks to the promoters and creators of this project for having wanted to remember, with affection, the efforts, sacrifices and joys of so many of our fellow citizens ».

Words of applause also came from the president of the Bellunesi nel Mondo Association, Oscar De Bona: «As an Association we immediately gave our utmost willingness to collaborate. It is really nice to see active committees, like that of Giaon, which have great interest in a historical phenomenon, which has fully involved our province. And then our descendants have a strong bond with the homeland. Just think of Brazil, where there are people of great depth, who have their roots right in Limana ».

On the part of the Ex emigranti Sinistra Piave family, secretary Venecia Simoes, accompanied by president Olinda Fiabane, gave her testimony: “I was born and raised in Uruguay, but Italian blood flows in my veins and I also married a Belluno man, also a former emigrant “.

The exhibition was presented by the historian Isabella Pilo: “The photographic material collected and described in this exhibition was patiently found thanks to the collaboration of the inhabitants of Giaon, a hamlet in the municipality of Limana. luck in distant lands. In this regard, it is our duty to thank the precious work done by Orazio De Toffol and the fractional committee. In this exhibition you will also find many stories, such as that of the Roncada family or, again, like the success of Ludovico Trevissoi who, after returning from abroad, started from a garage, to then create a leading company ».
The exhibition will remain open, until the end of 2022, only in the summer months with the following times: from Monday to Friday from 9 to 19; on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 to 12 and from 16 to 19.30 (with one person who will be available to visitors).
