The incident took place around 11 p.m. in the Statielei in Mortsel. “A man and a woman were walking with a dog, an American Stafford, on the Statielei in Mortsel,” says spokesperson Lieselotte Claessens of the Antwerp public prosecutor’s office. “At one point the dog attacked its owner and the woman.”

Local police Minos arrived on the scene, but upon arrival they were also attacked by the dog. The police were forced to shoot the dog. Bystanders heard several shots. Both the man and woman were taken to hospital with multiple bite wounds. Their condition is unclear. The police officers were not injured.

The cafes on the Statieplein in Mortsel were well filled on Friday evening, so several people witnessed it. “It all actually started in the café,” says an eyewitness. “The duo was sitting in a café with the dog. It was clear that the man could not control his dog. He started teasing the dog. Alcohol may have been involved. On the street, the man kicked the dog several times, then the animal attacked the couple.”
