[NTD News on August 14, 2021, Beijing time]US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman spoke with the Lithuanian Foreign Minister on August 13, reiterating US support for Lithuania and Taiwan. This is just after Sherman met with Qin Gang, the new Chinese ambassador to the United States, the next day she expressed support for Lithuania and Taiwan, which aroused concern.

According to a statement posted on the website by the US State Department, Sherman told Lithuanian Foreign Minister Lance Burgess that the United States resolutely stands with Lithuania and opposes the CCP’s “coercive behavior” against Lithuania.

The statement said that in addition to extensive discussions on US-Lithuanian relations, the two sides also emphasized that US-Europe cooperation should be strengthened, including cooperation on China issues. The two sides expressed their commitment to promoting peace, prosperity, security, democracy and human rights in the transatlantic region and around the world. The statement also said that the US Deputy Secretary of State reiterated that it supports Lithuania’s exchanges with Taiwan.

On the 12th, Sherman met with Qin Gang, the new Chinese ambassador to the United States, at the US State Department. Qin Gang unilaterally stated after the meeting that he emphasized to Sherman during the meeting that the Taiwan issue is the most important and sensitive issue in Sino-US relations, and clearly stated China’s position.

It is worth noting that Sherman spoke with the Lithuanian Foreign Minister the day after meeting Qin Gang to express support for the development of reciprocal relations between Lithuania and Taiwan. The timing is quite intriguing.

Lithuania recently decided to develop a mutually beneficial relationship with Taiwan and allowed the establishment of a Taiwan representative office. This move triggered protests by the CCP, and announced on the 10th that it would recall the CCP’s ambassador to Lithuania and demanded that the CCP’s ambassador to China be recalled, which aroused the attention of the outside world.

On the day of the CCP’s announcement, US State Department spokesperson Ned Price immediately condemned the retaliatory actions of the Beijing authorities and emphasized that the United States and Lithuania stood together.
