Double Warnings Issued as North Faces Rain and South Braces for ‘Sauna Days’

Double warnings are issued in the north and the rain will “douse” the high temperature and the south will have more “sauna days”

People’s Daily Online, Beijing, July 10 – The China Meteorological Administration has issued double warnings for high temperature and heavy rainfall in various parts of the country. Over the past weekend, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and provinces such as Henan, Shandong, Zhejiang, Fujian, and Jiangxi experienced scorching heat, with temperatures exceeding 40°C in many places. The Central Meteorological Observatory has continued to issue high-temperature orange warnings as the heatwave persists.

The regions most affected by the high temperature include the eastern part of Northwest China, most of North China, Huanghuai, Jianghan, Jiangnan, most of South China, and the Sichuan Basin. Some areas, such as southeastern Beijing, southern Hebei, northern Henan, eastern Zhejiang, and eastern Fujian, are expected to see temperatures soar above 40°C. However, relief is expected as the intensity of the high temperature will decrease in the northern region on the 11th, and by the 12th, the current round of high temperature will come to an end due to the onset of precipitation.

While the northern regions will experience a decline in temperatures, the high temperature in areas such as Jiangnan and South China will persist stubbornly. The Central Meteorological Observatory predicts that the number of high temperature days in the next 10 days will range from 7 to 9, accompanied by high humidity, creating a stuffy and uncomfortable environment. Additionally, the rainfall area is expected to move northwards this week, resulting in strong rainfall in regions such as Shandong and Jiangsu. To address this, the Central Meteorological Observatory has issued blue warnings for strong convective weather.

The affected areas are expected to witness short-term heavy rainfall, with hourly downpour reaching 30 to 50 millimeters and potentially even 60 millimeters or more. Thunderstorms with strong winds or hail of magnitude 8 to 10 are expected in parts of southeastern Jilin, northern and western Liaoning, central eastern and southern Shandong, northern and southern Jiangsu, and northern Zhejiang. The main impact period is anticipated to be from afternoon to midnight today.

As the dog days approach, the China Meteorological Administration is reminding residents in the south to be prepared for a series of “sauna days” in the upcoming week. It is advisable to take necessary precautions against heatstroke, reduce outdoor activities, especially during the hottest hours of the day, and be vigilant for signs of heat stroke. In northern Jiangsu, Shandong, and other regions, residents are advised to be cautious of secondary disasters such as landslides and mountain torrents that may occur due to heavy rainfall and strong convective weather. It is recommended to avoid areas with a high risk of meteorological disasters.

The China Meteorological Administration emphasizes the importance of heatstroke prevention and cooling measures during this period. The current weather conditions call for residents to stay indoors as much as possible, stay hydrated, and follow the guidelines to ensure their safety.
