Sint-Lievens-Houtem –
The driver of the vehicle involved in a fatal accident on Saturday on the E40 near Sint-Lievens-Houtem has been arrested. The East Flanders public prosecutor’s office confirms this.
A passenger car with a French license plate crashed into the central reservation at high speed in the early morning on Saturday. The vehicle had catapulted into another vehicle in the center lane and then crashed into the concrete median. The car rolled over and came to rest on its roof in the right lane.
A car driving in the right lane in the direction of Ostend was no longer able to avoid the overturned car. The passenger of the overturned vehicle, a 25-year-old woman with French nationality, was killed. (Continue reading below the video)
Four vehicles were involved in the accident. The motorway towards Ostend was closed to all traffic for several hours.
Arrested
The driver of the French vehicle was seriously injured and taken to hospital. He was now placed under arrest.
The driver of the vehicle that was hit by the French vehicle was also taken to hospital with injuries, but has since been released. (Read more below the photo)
The police investigation and witness statements showed that the driver of the French vehicle, a 32-year-old man, drove recklessly between other vehicles at inappropriate and excessive speed prior to the accident. The man was also under the influence of alcohol.
The driver remained in hospital until Wednesday. Today, at the request of the East Flanders public prosecutor’s office, he was brought before the investigating judge in Oudenaarde. The investigating judge decided to arrest the man for accidental killing. He was taken to prison. On Tuesday, the council chamber in Oudenaarde will decide whether the man will remain arrested.
