A 5.6 magnitude earthquake shook central Colombia this Friday, without authorities reporting any injuries or damage at the moment.

The earthquake occurred at 6:26 local time (11:26 GMT), when many people were still sleeping, and had the center-southern of the country as its epicenter, reported the Colombian Geological Service (SGC).

The epicenter was located six kilometers from the town of Ansermanuevo, in the north of the department of Valle del Cauca, on the border with the departments of the coffee zone, and at a depth of 33 kilometers, the information added.

For this reason, the tremor was strongly felt in cities such as Cali, Armenia, Pereira and Manizales, the latter in the coffee zone, where people evacuated their homes, and even in Bogotá.

“The tremor was felt in several parts of the city with various intensities (…) at this time the fire department has no reports of damage,” said Sergeant Luis Alfredo Jordan, of the Cali firefighters.

For their part, the Bogotá firefighters indicated in X that after the earthquake, in the Colombian capital “there are no reports or activation through Emergency Line 123.”

The tremor occurs just six days after the 25th anniversary of the 6.2 magnitude earthquake that on January 25, 1999 devastated the cities of Armenia and Pereira, in the coffee region, causing 1,125 deaths.
