Due to the drought that has affected the reservoirs of Colombia and Ecuador, the electrical interconnection between both countries has been completely cut off. This situation has led to Ecuador to experience scheduled blackouts of up to 13 hours a day during the last two weeks.
The minister in charge of Energy and Mines of Ecuador, Roberto Luque, confirmed this situation in a recent press conference. He assured that the operators of the national electrical systems of both countries are in technical talks to evaluate a possible reconnection as soon as possible.
Although Colombia, had already suspended the export of electricity to Ecuador due to a lack of surpluses and the need to satisfy its national demand, Luque explained that Colombian authorities have completely disconnected its electrical system from that of Ecuador.
According to Luque, this decision was made because, despite the suspension of energy transfer, the electrical systems absorb some energy from the other country through high voltage lines.
Luque emphasized that the intention is to resolve this matter amicably, since the stability or frequency of the electrical signal is beneficial for both countries.
