The Democracy and Development Foundation announced this Tuesday that, according to Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index, Ecuador’s citizen perception of corruption in institutions fell to 34 points.
The country is thus ranked 22nd among Latin American nations, taking into account that the best scored countries are Canada with 76, Uruguay with 73, followed by Barbados and the United States with 69.
On the contrary, the most corrupt countries are Venezuela with 13 points, while the penultimate place is shared by Haiti and Nicaragua with 17.
For the president of the Citizenship and Development Foundation, Mauricio Alarcón, explained that Transparency International evaluated 180 countries, in the case of Ecuador he stated that “for one more year there is a decline, a drop in its score, which means that Unfortunately, our country continues to be perceived by its own citizens as highly corrupt.”
In his opinion, there is evidence of a deterioration in institutions, freedom of the press and the work of journalists to prevent investigations into acts of corruption, as well as institutional weakness and impunity so that those responsible for these actions are punished. ./ The time
